Cygnus Instruments
manufacture Ultrasonic Metal Thickness Gauges which use a techinique
known as multiple echo. This method was pioneered by Cygnus to overcome
the problems associated with measuring through coatings and on badly
corroded metals.
Coatings up to 6mm thick, whether they are paint, epoxy or bitumen,
do not present any problems. Minimal preparation of the surface is
required, saving a considerable amount of both time and money. Multiple
echo automatically verifies each measurement before displaying the
reading, which means no erroneous measurements are displayed. This
technique is used throughout our range of gauges which have been designed
with specific applications in mind. Other features include no probe
zeroing, no re-calibration at switch on and protective membranes fitted
to the probe face prevent damage to the probe and keep cost of oqwnership
low.

Heavy duty gauge in a
rugger shockproof case. Designed to withstand extremely environments
CYGNUS
1 INTRINSICALLY SAFE
Certified intrinsically
safe for use in hazardous areas. No plant shutdown or hotwork permits
are required.
CYGNUS
1 UNDERWATER
World No.1 in underwater
thickness gauging. Pressure tested to 300m. Available with a topside
repeater or datalogging software. Large bright display. ROV mountable
units also available.
CYGNUS
2
Lightweight and robust.
Designed to mount onto the waist belt to keep hands free for climbing
ladders or scaffolding. A popular choice in the Marine Industry.
HOW IT WORKS
Only
Multiple Echo can give the true substrate thickness and ignore
coatings up to 6mm thick.
With Multiple Echo, reading are taken by measuring the time
delay between any three consecutive backwall echo's which means
that the coating thickness is completely ignored. The times
of T2 and T3 are equal to the time that it takes to just travel
through the metal. Only by looking at three echoes can the measurements
be automatically verified (where T2=T3).

COATING THICKNESS MEASUREMENT
• Fast, practical
and innovative portable coating thickness qauges with mobile phone type
menus • Integrated datalogging software diving max, min, mean
and standard deviation values • All mesurements are transfered
to the PC or printer via an infrared interface • Measures on both
Ferrous and Non Ferrous substrates with automatic recognition • No calibration necessary unless required • Different language
options: English, German, French (Others on request) • Large clear
LCD display
ULTRASONIC CONDITION MONITORING
• Pinpoint
air leaks in pressure and vaccum systems, valves, flanges, gaskets and along
pipes • Detect mechanicl wear of bearings, bushes or shafts in
motors and pumps with the stethoscope attachment • Locate bad
or leaking steam traps • Detect arcing and sparking in many electrical
circuitsand where access to power cables is hazardous or restricted
• Locate leaks on viechles from inside car bodies to air brake and
pneumatic systems • Find leaks in tanks, vessels, hatch covers,
watertight doors and windows
